چکیده

Objectives: To study the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2 relaxation time and the power spectrum of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in long-term follow up of traumatic brain injury. Methods: Nineteen channel quantitative electroencephalograms or qEEG, tests of cognitive function and quantitative MRI T2 relaxation times (qMRI) were measured in 18 mild to severe closed head injured outpatients 2 months to 4.6 years after injury and 11 normal controls. MRI T2 and the Laplacian of T2 were then correlated with the power spectrum of the scalp electrical potentials and current source densities of the qEEG. Results: qEEG and qMRI T2 were related by a frequency tuning with maxima in the alpha (8±12 Hz) and the lower EEG frequencies (0.5± 5 Hz), which varied as a function of spatial location. The Laplacian of T2 acted like a spatial±temporal `lens' by increasing the spatial± temporal resolution of correlation between 3-dimensional T2 and the ear referenced alert but resting spontaneous qEEG. Conclusions: The severity of traumatic brain injury can be modeled by a linear transfer function that relates the molecular qMRI to qEEG resonant frequencies. q 2001 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. Objective: A system for electrode placement is described. It is designed for studies on topography and source analysis of spontaneous and evoked EEG activity. Method: The proposed system is based on the extended International 10±20 system which contains 74 electrodes, and extends this system up to 345 electrode locations. Results: The positioning and nomenclature of the electrode system is desc...

Objective: An exploratory data analysis framework, based on minimal spanning tree, is proposed as a means to support the analysis of single trial (ST) electrophysiological signals. The core of this framework is the compact description of the input ST sample in a form of content-dependent ordered lists. Based on the established hierarchies, ef®cient ways to increase the SNR, extract prototypical...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive means of electrically stimulating neurons in the human cerebral cortex, is able to modify neuronal activity locally and at distant sites when delivered in series or trains of pulses. Data from stimulation of the motor cortex suggest that the type of effect on the excitability of the cortical network depends on the frequency of stimulation....

Objective: Normal individuals were used to quantitate electroencephalographic (EEG) changes during concurrent administration of 0.5 and 100 Hz cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES). Methods: Twelve normal, right-handed males were used in a randomized, double-blind crossover design study. A 3 amplifier system incorporating noise-cancellation was used to collect one channel of EEG (O1-Cz confi...

Objectives: A pre-conscious auditory sensory (echoic) memory of about 10 s duration can be studied with the event-related brain potential mismatch negativity (MMN). Previous work indicates that this memory is preserved in abstinent chronic alcoholics for a duration of up to 2 s. The authors' aim was to determine the integrity of auditory sensory memory as indexed by MMN in chronic alcoholism, w...
